What do you mean extractions are so 1985?

No samples! Stop giving away your retail sales!
I see it all the time. The act of giving out samples to your client is costing you money. Even if your branded skincare is nice enough to give you free samples, using them costs you sales. But how can that be? Samples increase sales, right? Used correctly samples may lead to sales, but in my 18-year career I have never seen one proven case! Most of the time our skincare department uses samples as a “thank you gift.” Especially when your staff thinks your prices are to high they have to do something extra to offset the guilt they feel. These often include:
I know it first hand. While I never gave out samples to my personal clients, my lead esthetician needed us to order extra mini-shopping bags. She didn’t need the bags for retail sales. She needed them to keep all the samples she gave out! Samples are an excuse for your staff NOT to sell products. It gives them an easy out: “Take this home and try it. If you like it you can buy it next time.” Next time never comes because there are always more samples to give. What do you do? Simple. We took away all the samples. If the cookie jar is empty they can’t give away the farm! We made a strict Sample Policy. Our policy was to only give out a sample if the client asked for one twice. The first time they ask about a product or a sample of a product we would take them to the tester. We would put a little on the back of their hand. Have the client smell and feel the product while we explained the Three Product Mantra: what does it smell like, what will it do for you, and when do you use it. Nine out of ten times the client would buy the product that day! If they asked again to take home a sample, we made the process very personal. We used a small, recycled plastic container to make them a sample. Now it is not just a foil packet, but a very personal and interactive recommendation. OK, but What about Travel Sizes or Kits? Same issue here. Any of the spas I have done onsite sales training in have given away thousands of dollars because the staff sells the smallest size possible. If we don’t tackle the fear of selling then your staff would rather sell a $8 cleanser over a $30 one! Kits are the same issue! An untrained staff will be more likely to sell a $30 kit because it has five products in the bag. They feel it has more value because there are more items. But a kit with 2-ounce cleansers and a half-ounce moisturizer will not prove beneficial to you client.
